Old-Fashioned Glass
An old-fashioned glass, rocks glass, or lowball glass is a short tumbler used for serving various on-the-rocks drinks, meaning over ice, or cocktails having few ingredients. A perfect rocks glass has a perfect round bottom, and when the ice is dropped from the correct height a “ting” can be heard. It is named after the Old fashioned cocktail, traditionally served in such a glass. A White Russian is traditionally served in the Old-fashioned glass.
Contemporary American “Old-fashioned” and “rocks” glasses may hold as much as 8-12 oz (22-34 cl), and may be used to serve a wide variety of beverages over ice, such as whiskey or gin. However, it is quite common to see old-fashioned glasses holding significantly less than 8 oz (22 cl). A “double old-fashioned” is often considered to hold 12 oz (34 cl).
